In December of 2022 I took a few pictures of some surfers at Second Beach in Newport, Rhode Island. I was instantly hooked on surfing photography! The action, the waves, the speed and the challenge attract me as a new way to practice my skills and highlight this talented and athletic men and women. I think this is something I'll be doing a lot more of, so I decided to dedicate a page to it. I hope you enjoy!

This is one of the first surfing pictures I took. It was foggy at Second Beach, so I decided that the photographs look better in black and white than color.

Even though this photograph is taken from behind the surfer (who happens to be female), I really like it because of the curls in the water. I took this from the sidewalk near the Coast Guard house, which gave me a great vantage point to look right down the curls. As I've learned, many surfers lead with their left foot, which means at Narragansett Beach it's difficult to get these kinds of shots if I want to see the surfers' faces!

Just because I can't see down the curls, that doesn't mean I can't get some decent shots of surfers inside them.

"Makin' it look easy"

I'm amazed at the skill, balance, and athleticism surfers possess.

"Launch"

"Lovin' it"

I really enjoy catching the look on surfers' faces when they're having a great time.
