American Kestrel with Mouse, Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, San Antonio, NM
I went back to Bosque for a week in December of 2024, because the one day I spent there in 2021 just wasn't enough. I was fortunate to watch this handsome Kestrel eat his tasty meal.

A "host" or "ubiquity" of sparrows (I don't know who makes up these terms), Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, San Antonio, NM
All day long you could see sparrows flying in synchronized formation as they moved around the fields at Bosque

I couldn't find a more suited pair.

Male California Quail, Bass Lake, California
My brother and I stayed in a campground near Bass Lake, and there were several quail milling about.

Great Blue Heron, Beaver River Preserve, near West Kingston, Rhode Island
This Heron kept posing as he preened, which they will do when they're not feeling threatened.

"Black-Crowned Night Heron"
North Kingstown, RI.
I saw this handsome bird in the back yard of my mother’s home, which is now where my wife and I live. The small pond attracts a variety of wildlife.

"Preening Great Egrets"
Marsh Meadows Wildlife Preserve, Jamestown, RI.
Great Egrets are stately birds, but they squabble a lot. I was able to capture this pair in a quieter moment.

"Cooper's Hawk"
Warwick, RI.
This was taken in my backyard at my house in Warwick. Although I lived in a small city, I was fortunate to have a lot of wildlife visit me.

They can stand perfectly still for soooo long.

The Golden Hour light was sublime.
"Sandhill Cranes in Flight"
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, San Antonio, NM.
I first saw Sandhill Cranes when I lived in the Fairbanks, Alaska area. They summered in fields at Creamer’s Dairy. Those birds winter at Bosque del Apache, so the ones I saw may have flown in from Fairbanks.

"Juvenile Black-Crowned Night Heron"
Galilee Bird Sanctuary, Galilee, Rhode Island
"Road Runner"
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, San Antonio, New Mexico.
My brother, who was traveling with his wife and me, wanted very badly to see a road runner. This handsome male gave us our one chance, as he sauntered down the road.

"Great Blue Heron Portrait"
Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, Sudbury, Massachusetts.

"Great Egret Kerfuffle"
Marsh Meadows Nature Preserve, Jamestown, Rhode Island.
All birds squabble, but big birds squabble a LOT, especially egrets and herons.

"Watching and Waiting"
John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge, Narragansett, Rhode Island.
A male osprey, doing what they do.

"Swimming Beaver"
Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, Sudbury, Massachusetts.
It seems that in many of the places I go in nature, the beaver has had a hand in constructing the landscape.

"Cedar Waxwing"
Wildcat Falls, Merrimack, New Hampshire

"Pileated Woodpecker"
I had been seeing this bird at my mother's house where she lived before passing away in August of 2022. I finally remembered to bring my camera one day and was fortunate to catch him intently looking for bugs to eat. He seems to be a regular in the neighborhood, so I hope to catch some better pictures. I took this picture with my (new to me) Canon 600mm f/4 IS USM lens. It has really improved my photography over the Sigma 150-600mm lens I had been using. Its sharpness is an improvement, and the larger aperture make a huge difference in low light, which is when I shoot most of my wildlife photographs.

"Great Egret with Fish"
John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge, Narragansett, Rhode Island

"White-Tailed Deer and Great Egret"
Sachuest National Wildlife Refuge, Newport, Rhode Island.
This young deer appears to be sticking out its tongue at the egret. Shortly after I took this photograph, the bird moved, and the startled deer jumped back several feet.

"Osprey"
John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge, Narragansett, Rhode Island
This male appears to be diving, but he was actually taking off.

"Barnacles on a Humpback Whale's Fluke"
I went whale watching out of Gloucester, Massachusetts, on the 7 Seas' "Privateer IV". What an amazing experience! At times we had a whale within 50-100 feet of the boat. I am amazed at how graceful such an immense animal can be.

"Exhale"
Close-up of a humpback whale's "blow." It's a very forceful expulsion of air and water, which allowed us to easily locate the whales when they surfaced. Otherwise they are almost silent, unless they slap their flukes against the water when diving.
